Grown-up Disney Princess Party
March 5th, 2010 § Leave a Comment
For my last birthday I thought I’d combine my three favorite things: Disney, theme parties, and great friends.
I started with the Disney Scene Setter; two plastic rolls that turned my apartment into an illustrated Disney wonderland. The rolls combined came up to be eight feet wide and covered twenty-three feet of wall. The five-ft castle and princesses were add-ons that I simply taped to the background you can find an entire party package here. Its not just for kids- all of my friends loved it!
Here’s my Snow White theme bathroom. I cut the mirror frame out of a large sheet of gold poster board and used a sharpie and acrylic paint to make it look just like the one in Snow White. Using an exacto-knife and a cutting board made cutting out the center a breeze.
“Mirror Mirror on the Wall” was written with a glass market bought at Michael’s
Glittery “poison” apples were placed on the sink to complete the scene. Click here for full instructions to make your own.
A pink-themed dessert bar was set up featuring chocolate covered strawberries and other sweets. The cake stands I made from candle holders and glass plates I picked up at a thrift store. See how-to instructions here.
I made “Princess____” drink tags- guests put their real name and princess names on the tags before tying to the glass stem with the ribbon.
Activities included coloring (I found Disney Princess printable coloring pages here)Princess crown making (I used the Princess Tiana Tiara cutout for my pattern) as well as a Disney Princess Trivia game- the prize was a Snow White DVD.
Other party elements:
- I served champagne with strawberries and Snow White’s Apple Potion (Absolut Pear, Absolut Peach, Cranberry juice, Apple juice, and lemon-lime soda)
- White tissue paper poufs hung from the ceiling to look like puffy clouds (click here for the how-to)
- Pop-up tiara invitations were sent to the guests (click here for the how-to)
All of the guests came dressed as their favorite Disney Princess would have if she lived in 2010 (this was my Snow White costume)
One of my girl friends Holly was so sweet and made cupcakes just for the party. I wish I had thought to take pictures before they were gobbled up! She put in the cutest Princess cupcake toppers she found at Williams-Sonoma. The party was so great- an excuse for a bunch of almost grown-ups to have the dream princess party.
DIY $2 Thrift Store Cake Stand

You heard that right- $2.00. Can you tell? So simple. The base is a 99-cent candleholder glued to a 99-cent clear glass plate (make sure you wash the plate first.) I used hot glue because I wanted to be able to pull off the plate and paint the base different colors whenever I feel like it to match my party/mood. If you want a more stable piece I would suggest super glue.
This is a great piece for food displays but you can also use it as a home decor piece by topping with pillar candles, decorative ornaments, or fruit.
Cheap and simple Halloween glam decorations
October 13th, 2009 § 1 Comment
My mom loves it when I decorate her house for Halloween. This year I pulled out the giant box of cutesy decorations I put up every year (ceramic jack-o-lanterns, intricate black iron candle holders bearing orange pillar candles) and we decided it was time for something a little more exciting.

I took the picture with my phone so bear with me. So what do we have here?
- White glitter skull (skull- $1 at the dollar store, spray painted with white paint and then again with spray glitter)
- Silver pumpkins (tiny pumpkins from the grocery store- $0.69, spray painted with silver paint)
- black glitter rose (black rose from Michael’s- $1.99, sprayed with glitter)
- silver tray and black netting- both from the dollar store
- spider webbed wine goblets (glasses- $1 each, I drew a web print with elmer’s glue and dusted with silver glitter)

I created the “Poison” bottle by first holding a wine bottle over a pot of boiling water to steam off the label, then printed this label I found from an awesome gallery of free spooky potion labels on Flickr

Stocking your kitchen for the unexpected guest

You see all those public service ads telling you what to stock in case of disaster but WHAT if you have a guest pop by unannounced?
I have girlfriends who work near me and am a spontaneous girl therefore I constantly have last-minute guests popping by. This is why it is important to always have a reserve of quick appetizers to offer- because a guest in my house, no matter how unexpected, is always a welcome guest! Here’s a list of some quick-to-serve items that will make you a hot last-minute hostess.
- stuffed olives (in the jar)
- frozen bread sticks and marinara (before you cook the breadsticks, brush with olive oil and salt)
- dipping spices, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar (serve with whatever bread you have on hand)
- mixed nuts
- Lindt chocolates (these play double-duty as cute decor if you store your favorite colors in apothcary jars)
- pepper jelly and rosemary crackers (serve with any cheese you have onhand- even tastes good with string cheese!)
My personal favorite- go for nostalgia and buy a box each of Cap’n Crunch, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, and Cocoa Puffs (store in airtight containers to make them last after opening)- serve in a martini glass with milk for a fun ruin-your-dinner appetizer that your friends probably haven’t enjoyed in years!
Stylish Aprons for the Culinary Cutie

Wearing an apron while you cook delicious food doesn’t mean you have to look like a grandma. I have made a list of my favorite aprons that are so hot you may want to keep it on for dinner!
Vintage Cherry and polka-dot print hostess apron- $28 on Etsy
Polka-dot apron- $32 at Anthropologie
Pear apron- $45 on Etsy
Roses apron- $32 at The Merry Martini
Sooo cute- I want to collect them all!
Coming soon- Aloha! Vintage Hawaiian Dinner Party Theme
August 25th, 2009 § 1 Comment

My friend/coworker recently enlisted my help planning his first dinner party (sadly enough I don’t get to cook- can’t win them all!) Since he’s planning to make Indonesian food and he’s a classy dude I thought what fun a vintage hula-y theme would be! Above is the invitation I created that the theme is centered around. Below are ideas for the table setting-

cabana striped tablecloth, vintage silver pieces carrying bright flowers and mason jars filled with tea lights, best of all- each guest gets a little dashboard hula girl as their name card! I’ll be back to post pics of how the invites turn out (paper of course) and pics from the party.
Mad Dinner Party with an Alice in Wonderland Theme
May 27th, 2009 § 3 Comments

An unexpected dinner party theme to bring the crazy out of your guests. This is also a great budget party because the more random your centerpiece is the better! Thrift stores are a great place to find mismatched teapots, candles, white rabbit figurines and more.
- Make the centerpiece on a bed of moss and butterflies. I found the teapots, playing cards, candles, and even the white rosebush at a thriftstore.
- Namecards were made from white roses painted red with puffy paint and hand-written tags tied with ribbon.
- Tie “Drink Me” labels on your wine bottles
- I made the invitation by creating and printing out the inside and front, then gluing to a plain notecard. Embellish with ribbon and glitter paint.
What to serve:
- Shiitake Angel Hair Pasta or Wild Mushroom Soup
- Spring salad topped with edible flowers
- Sugar cookies with “Eat Me” frosted on them

Make Your Picnic a Little More Posh Part 1: The Setup
May 25th, 2009 § 1 Comment

What better way to celebrate Summer and save a little cash than dining alfresco at a local park, your backyard, or apartment rooftop deck? Get your picnic ammo ready early this year and do it in style.
- Crate and Barrel makes this ingenious “Table in a Bag,” a knee-high table that rolls up and is ready to go.
- Set the mood with eco-friendly table ”candles” from CB2 that is as much work to light as putting in a battery.
- Drink your wine right and pack it in tight with these wine glasses from GSI that snap apart at the base for easy transportation.
- Instead of paper plates, pay your respects to Mother Earth by bringing dinnerware that is either reusable or made from renewable sources like Bambu Veneerware.
- Design Sponge has a great post for a DIY picnic blanket. Hint: instead of sewing the two sides together, make it faster and easier on yourself by using iron-on hemming- basically like double-stick tape for fabric.
- DIY picnic bag- Instead of paying $60 for a picnic bag -make your own! Instructions below.
- Buy a tote or find one you already own.
- Go to the Goodwill or Value Village and scout for insulated lunch bags (2-3 should do it- the thinner the better!) Don’t forget to wash in the dishwasher before using.
- Cut the insulated bags along the seams and line your tote with them and adhere with double-stick tape.
- Using a plate and a bundle of forks to measure, hand sew 2 pieces of fabric elastic to the inside of the tote to ‘hold in plates and utensils.
- Pack with your picnic, some wine and you’re ready to go!
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post when I’ll post a mouth-watering menu to pack now that you have some great ideas for gear.
